On April 28, 2023, Lori Khatchadourian, co-director of CHW, spoke at a UN panel on the “Prevention of Atrocity Crimes in the Digital Era” at the United Nations in New York City. The panel examined the challenges and opportunities presented by new technologies in the global effort to document and deter atrocity crimes. The panel brought together experts in human rights, heritage, and humanitarianism to assess the “impact of digital tools in monitoring warning signs and risk factors that can lead to preparation and perpetration of atrocities”. Prof. Khatchadourian discussed the strengths and limitations of satellite technology as a tool for documenting cultural genocide and related forms of erasure, detecting early warning signs and deterring future abuses.
