CHW Releases Monitoring Report #5

CHW released its fifth Monitoring Report on the status of cultural heritage in and around Nagorno-Karabakh today, June 22, 2023. It documents 1 destroyed bridge, 2 damaged cemeteries, & 5 newly threatened sites. In this cycle, we identified two concerning new developments.

First, we are seeing impacts in new regions. Previously, the areas of greatest concern were Khojavend/Hadrut and Lachin/Berdzor. This round, we see continued impacts in those areas as well as, for the first time, in Martakert and Aghdam.

Second, CHW has identified a new threat. Previously, road construction was the main cause of damage, destruction, & threat. But this spring, we documented 3 sites endangered by military emplacements, in violation of Article 4.1 of the Hague Convention.

You can find all of CHW’s reports on our Reports Page. CHW will continue the costly work of cultural heritage monitoring using commercial satellite imagery. To contribute to this work, visit our website and click “Donate Now”. As always, we refer our findings to @UNESCO, @UNESCO_Az, @ArmUNESCO.
