Satellite imagery shows a new threat to the integrity of the 19th century Ghazanchetsots Armenian Cathedral in Shusha. Between April 25 and July 23, 2026, buildings arose on the grounds of the cathedral, encroaching on a sacred landscape.

The cathedral, built in 1887, was damaged during the 2nd Nagorno-Karabakh War. Baku’s post-war restoration removed the conical roof atop the central dome, distorting the structure’s authenticity. New construction follows a master plan developed by Chapman Taylor.
As development activity encircles the cathedral, an active place of worship until 2023, CHW calls on architectural firms remaking Shusha to preserve both the authenticity and integrity of the town’s historic fabric.
