CHW welcomes the decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to indicate provisional measures for the protection of Armenian cultural heritage in Nagorno-Karabakh. CHW’s reports were submitted as evidence in the case. We are pleased to have played a role in this success for cultural heritage protection. Recognizing urgency and the threat of irreparable harm, as well as the link between racial discrimination and abuses to cultural heritage, the World Court ordered Azerbaijan to “take all necessary measures to prevent and punish acts of vandalism and desecration affecting Armenian cultural heritage, including but not limited to churches and other places of worship, monuments, landmarks, cemeteries and artifacts.”
